Sociocultural Aspects of Family Planning and HIV/AIDS in Nigeria
This publication is a response to the dilemma of creating effective HIV programmes in a rapidly growing population such as Nigeria’s. The challenge is to make family planning responsive to HIV prevention. The integration of robust HIV prevention services into reorganised family planning and reproductive health services is seen as the way forward.
Such reorganisation can only be achieved if the true import of family planning and its synergy with HIV prevention are fully appreciated. Various chapters deal with family planning history, contraceptive techniques and the changing perception of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. The policy and programmatic implications of such reorganisations are also articulated. Reflections on the Nigerian population situation are also offered.
Anyone whose career is in the field of reproductive health, both public and private, must gain access to this book. Undergraduate and graduate students of demography, medicine, public health and related disciplines would benefit intellectually from the lucidly written eleven chapters.
